Ty Michele, Hairstylist

A hair stylist has to have the skill set and ability to learn new techniques, all while being ahead of trends just like any other artist. I think it's safe to say hair stylist, Ty Michele has hair down to a science. In 2016 it is not enough for a stylist to just know how to do "hair", you have to be both innovative and creative, and that's what her brand is all about. If you follow her on social media you know that she is no stranger to experimenting with her own look. When I spoke to the DC-based hair stylist we discussed how important it is to promote healthy hair, confidence, and the key to offering your clients the best customer experience.

Who or what influenced your decision to become a hair stylist?
I randomly got a call one day about styling hair for a fashion editorial shoot because the original hairstylist could not make it. At the time I was not known as a hairstylist nor did I brand myself as one, not too many people knew that  it was an occasional hobby of mine. I don't know what made me say yes but, I did. Doing that gig made me realize that the hair industry is where I belong. I could not continue to go through life without fulfilling my passion.

Finding a great hair stylist you trust,  is almost as hard as finding the perfect man. Was it hard building your clientele in the beginning of your career?
Most definitely, especially being a new stylist in an over saturated industry. Once I created a brand for myself, the more clients began to come my way. I kind of picked a skill that I was good at and marketed that. Customer service is also key! My clients know that I genuinely care about making them happy. That alone can separate you as a stylist and keep people coming back.

Your style is amazing, you give off major sex appeal, do you think hair and a person's style go hand and hand?
Definitely! Hair is the cherry on top of a great wardrobe. My brand is designed to merge both fashion and hair.  My hairstyles are almost always influenced by what I want to wear. As for my clients, I always evaluate their personal style before recommending a hairstyle.

What is the one beauty product you can not leave the house without?
 Lip balm

What would you say has been the biggest challenge so far in your career?
My biggest challenge has been gaining confidence and having patience. I started late in my career after going to college and earning my bachelor's degree. Because of this, I feel like I am behind. I had to gain confidence and sacrifice a lot to begin this career path. So I have to remind myself to be confident and know that I will one day be great and have patience because the best hairstylists have been in the game for years!

If you could work with anyone, who would it be and why?
Good question, I wish I could answer this but I am totally blank. I welcome all opportunities really.

Your work is always perfection, especially when it comes to custom units, cuts, and color! What advice can you give people on the importance of taking care of their hair?
The health of the hair is always number one and everything isn't for everyone. Sometimes we get caught up on the look of a hairstyle or what's in trend and we never stop to analyze if it's right for us. When you choose a style make sure your hair can handle it and that it is properly maintained.

What are five things you think every woman should have in their wardrobe?
I think it depends on one's personal style but for me, I'd say: Leather biker jacket, sexy point toe black pump (with toe cleavage lol), distressed pair of skinny's, a pair of cool trainers, all-purpose black dress.

Where do you see the Ty Michele brand in the next few years?
I see big things, my vision is so crazy that I can't even put it into words. But, I continue to keep faith and know that what is for me will be for me. It is already written.

If you could give any advice to someone on perfecting their craft and following their passion what would it be?
As cliche as it may be, please do not give up. That is the number one reason why people never achieve their goals. Do not wonder "what if" go find out. Never let anyone discourage you, block them out and remember no dream is too big. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, people that are in your industry that you can learn from.
