Hotels are always a hit or miss type of thing, pictures can be deceiving and you can read a million reviews and people will still find something bad to say. I would like to think I am pretty good when it comes to choosing the right place to call home while on vacation. That is not to say I have not had a couple misses when traveling, but over all I am good at weeding out the bad places.
Tip 1: Never only read the reviews on the hotels website. I say this because most hotel websites have a lot more positive reviews than negative, and you want to make sure every review is honest. I always tend to google the hotel and read reviews from google users.
Tip 2: Try to only narrow your hotel search to 4 star's and above, chances are someone somewhere will still have something bad to say, but unfortunately even 5 star hotels have at least one bad review.
Tip 3: If you want a more homey feeling or you are traveling with a lot of people, try booking a room through Airbnb. This company is relatively new and offers you vacation rentals, homes, and apartments to stay in all over the world.
Tip 4: If you want to see real pictures of the hotel from real people, try to look up the hotel through hash-tags. Most time hash-tags help because they are from real visitors who have actually stayed or visited that particular hotel, oyster.com is also a good alternative from viewing hotel pictures.
Tip 5: When you finally get to your room immediately check to see if it is clean, this includes checking the mattresses for bed bugs (first thing I check), seeing if the bathroom is clean (number one pet peeve), checking to see if they have given you clean towels and cloths, and of course making sure the sheets are clean!
